BIC’s Annual Industry Mix+Mentor

Proximity to midtown Manhattan and many major communications corporations is one of BIC’s core assets, allowing students and industry to intersect in meaningful ways. Every October, BIC introduces our latest batch of brilliant BICsters to the industry at our annual Mix + Mentor event. More than 100 guests gather to enjoy hot hors d’oeuvres, cold drinks, and fresh talent at the corporate offices of a midtown New York agency -- on the industry’s turf. Business-like, but cocktail casual, the mixer creates a platform for recruiters and professionals to connect with students in shared areas of interest.

Mentors come from companies such as Droga5, RGA, Edelman, New York Times T-Brand Studio, GroupM, MediaLink, TBWA, Deutsch, BBDO, HAVAS PR, Draftfcb, Horizon Media, Ketchum, Finn Partners, and Weber Shandwick.
Held early in our students’ academic career, the BIC M+M has few rules: Everyone mixes. Everyone leaves with someone else’s business card. That’s it. The resulting relationships are theirs to define: mentors can help guide coursework, be available for advice, meet regularly for check-ins, provide case studies, suggest books, do agency tours, offer internships/jobs, and generally do what it takes to encourage student growth and graduate the type of talent the industry would like to recruit.
A recent New York Times Op-Ed piece, “It Takes a Mentor” by Thomas Friedman, identified a major finding from research done by Gallop in 2013: “Successful students had one or more … mentors and took a real interest in their aspirations, and they had an internship related to what they were learning in school.”

That’s why the BIC Mix+Mentor isn’t just a good time, it’s serious business. And attendance is required of all BIC incoming students.
